So often when we’re focused on reaching our goals, we’re charging full speed ahead in an effort to fulfill what we set out to do. One of the biggest mistakes we make, however, is not taking the time to step back, assess and even congratulate ourselves on our progress. Instead of focusing on what we’ve done right, we nitpick at what we haven’t done.

I’m definitely guilty of this. Us Type A+++’s are especially prone to being harder on ourselves than everyone else is. I remember in 2013 when I realized that it was time for me to close down my marketing and design firm that I had run for 13 years. It was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made. Part of what made it so difficult was trying to figure out what in the world I was going to do with my life next, since God had made it clear it was time for this mature bird to leave my very comfortably uncomfortable nest.

But what else was I qualified to do? How was I going to transfer my skills from one dream to another? What kind of life did I want to build in this next chapter of my book? The questions and the doubts just kept coming and made me even more uncomfortable than I already was. See, us Type A+++’s like to always know what’s coming next. We also need to know how it’s coming; who it’s coming from; and why it’s coming to us. It’s a control thing, you see.

The problem with wanting to be in control all the time is that it keeps you from seeing the beauty of how your life to unfolds according to God’s will. Because that illusion of being in control is just that—an illusion. Life is always going to throw us curve balls that we have absolutely no control over. I think the thing to understand is that although we don’t have control over what happens to us, we can choose how we are going to respond to it.

So I decided to respond to my doubts and questions about my next chapter by writing down my successes. I figured that if I just listed everything I had accomplished in my professional life that I was proud of, I would then be able to sift through all those words to figure out what in the world I was supposed to do in this next chapter. I really didn’t expect anything from the exercise, but I was desperate for clarity and answers so it gave me somewhere to start.

And then a funny thing happened…

After I had finished writing down every single accomplishment from my professional career that I could think of (I gave myself a time limit of one hour), I was floored. I didn’t recognize the person I had created on that piece of paper. She was me and I was her, but I hadn’t really taken the time to get to know this person over the past 15 years. I was too busy rushing her from meeting to meeting, project to project, idea to implementation. I had never had a chance to really sit down with her and congratulate her for being so amazing and fabulous and…fearless. I don’t think I had ever even told her, “Girl, you are baaaad! (As in good.)”

Because over the past 15 years, she had worked to change lives, serve others and use her gifts to the best of her ability.

She certainly had made mistakes along the way and wasn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but she was still amazing. And I finally gave her credit for it.

Seeing all my accomplishments written down in black and white on one piece of paper completely changed my perspective of who I was and what I was capable of. It reminded me that, in the past, anything I had put my mind to, I had always been successful in bringing to life. It gave me the foundation I needed to lift off and soar in this next chapter of my life: my Bold & Fearless chapter.

And although I’m taking everything I have learned and running with it, I also recognize that it’s important to find opportunities to re-invest in myself and continue learning from others who can take me to even greater heights. That’s why I’m excited to be attending Steve Harvey’s SOAR Retreat for Women from October 16-18, 2015 in Miami, Florida!
