That Thing You Fear

That Thing You Fear
11 Oct 2013

This is one of the most scary, exciting, powerful things I’ve ever done in my life. Launch a blog that has nothing (and yet, everything) to do with the work I’ve done over the past 15 years. If you’re like me, a typical Type A (+++), everything has to be just right—the timing, the finances, the weather…your hair—before you step into something that you know could be life-changing, but there’s that thing keeping you from taking the leap. Even after you’ve read all the motivational books, re-posted all the Facebook quotes, attended all the workshops and conferences, and talked to yourself with more positive affirmations than Joel Osteen has in all his books, you still haven’t taken the steps to move towards that thing, that dream, that goal, that keeps you up at night and gets your blood pumping with the possibilities.

FearWell, for me, I didn’t have a choice. Not if I was finally going to live out the dreams that I’ve had in my spirit for years now. Tell me if you can relate: Have you ever felt like you have this gift that you want to share with the world, and it’s sitting right in your head/chest/soul/hand, but yet, it has nowhere to go? Or at least that’s how it seems. Every time you try to use it, it somehow gets blocked. And yet, you can see, feel, smell, touch all of the good it can do once it’s given wings to fly. Lisa Nichols (LOVE HER!) calls it “that champion inside of you just dying to get out.”

I can tell you that I’ve been there, done that, and own the T-shirt—as have countless others who have been able to break through the blockage to successfully walk in their purpose. And after having several come-to-Jesus meetings with Jesus Himself, I decided it was time. Time to put all my fears aside (or at least in storage for the time being) and allow myself to bring all of me to the table without hiding behind any titles. Just me. Standing. In my own power. Boldly. Fearlessly. Faithfully.

Taking everything I’ve learned as an artist, designer, speaker, writer…a mother, daughter, sister, friend…a globetrotter, cultural junkie, dance fanatic; everything God has knocked me upside the head with (don’t act like you don’t know); everything I’ve had to re-learn over and over again until I got it—and sharing it with you.

But this is not going to be your typical inspirational blog. Because for me, standing in my power means not just keepin’ it real, but also bringing my culture and East African heritage right along with me. As long as it took me to embrace my Ugandan and Rwandese roots, I also realize that those same roots have served to help me heal, live joyfully, and become more of who I was meant to be. I’ll be digging into my portfolio of creativity, culture, and communication and sprinkling in some faith, fearlessness, and fun! Oh, and you might also run into some random thoughts here every now and then.

My hope for you is that, as you come along with me and my Bold & Fearless friends, mentors, and icons on this journey, you will give yourself permission to walk boldly into the life that the world is waiting for you to live. For being fearless doesn’t mean that you have no fear—I actually think that fear is necessary to push us past our comfort zone into our audacity zone. Rather, living fearlessly means that you fear less the outcome you don’t know, than you do leaving this earth without ever having used your gifts to light up the world around you. Let’s light it up!

Welcome,

Julian

You've just written my story for the past year! I'm looking forward to overcoming my fears the same you have.

There is nothing like facing your fears and just going for it. At the very least, you won't be bored!
